Sea Girt History at the New Jersey Shores

Exploring the Stockton family legacy and Commodore Robert Field Stockton

Sea Girt, a picturesque borough along the New Jersey shore, boasts a rich tapestry of history intertwined with the legacy of the Stockton family. The town's origins trace back to Commodore Robert Field Stockton, a prominent figure in American history.

In 1853, Commodore Stockton acquired a substantial tract of land in the area, establishing a lavish summer estate between what are now known as Stockton Lake and Wreck Pond. He aptly named this estate "Sea Girt," meaning surrounded or enclosed by the sea. This name would later be adopted by the borough itself.

Before European settlers arrived, the region was inhabited by the Lenni Lenape people. They held annual gatherings on the beaches of what is now Sea Girt, a tradition that early settlers continued, celebrating what was known as the "Big Sea Day" on the second Saturday in August.

By the late 19th century, Sea Girt had transformed into a sought-after resort community. In 1875, the arrival of the railroad, facilitated by the Sea Girt Land Improvement Company, made the area more accessible, spurring development. The original train station, constructed using sand from the local beach, now houses the town library.

The Sea Girt Lighthouse, built in 1896, stands as a testament to the town's maritime heritage. It was the last shore lighthouse with an integral keeper's residence built on the east coast of the United States. Today, the lighthouse serves as a museum, offering guided tours and hosting community events.

In recent years, Sea Girt has seen developments that honor its rich history. In 2024, the borough completed the redesign and relocation of Monument Park. This project involved moving existing monuments to a more open area centered around a new flagpole, enhancing the space for community gatherings and reflection. The park now features additional landscaping, lighting, and plans for a town clock, funded through community donations.

The town's real estate landscape has also evolved. In October 2025, NextHome Shore Success opened its doors in Sea Girt, offering a modern, client-focused approach to real estate in Monmouth and Ocean counties. This addition reflects the borough's ongoing growth while maintaining its historical charm.

Sea Girt's commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing progress ensures that the legacy of the Stockton family and the town's rich history continue to be celebrated by residents and visitors alike.
