Unusual manatee sightings have sparked curiosity and excitement along the New Jersey coast this week.

Local residents were taken by surprise when a manatee appeared in the Shark River in Belmar over the weekend.

Several people paused their errands and weekend activities to catch a glimpse of the gentle visitor slowly swimming near the surface.

Community members quickly shared photos and videos, capturing the rare moment for neighbors and friends who missed it.

The appearance of manatees in New Jersey is exceptionally rare, especially as summer transitions to cooler months.

Most manatees usually prefer the warm southern waters of Florida, only venturing this far north during unusual stretches of warm weather or shifting ocean currents.

This recent sighting prompted the Marine Mammal Stranding Center to remind the public about safe interaction practices.

Officials advise everyone to maintain a respectful distance and to promptly report any observations of the animal, ensuring its well-being is prioritized.

Such gentle giants face real risks when venturing so far from home.

Sadly, history offers reminders—past New Jersey encounters haven’t always ended safely.

One manatee captured local attention in 2009 when it was rescued in a difficult operation at a Linden oil refinery by dozens of responders, including the Marine Mammal Stranding Center.

That adventure concluded with the animal flown back to Florida for rehabilitation, though fate was not so kind years later.

Each unexpected visit highlights both the marvels and dangers these animals face as our climate and waters change.

Local marine experts suggest these recent manatee sightings offer a reminder to remain vigilant and responsible stewards of coastal habitats.
