Warming ocean temperatures are drawing both swimmers and sharks closer to New Jersey’s coastline, sparking a rise in local shark sightings.
Researchers recently tracked a nearly 9-foot white shark, Nori, between Ocean City and Sea Isle City, notching the season’s first major appearance in the area.
Meanwhile, another white shark, Quint, nearly 10 feet long, was detected near Atlantic City, highlighting the ongoing annual white shark migration to northern summer feeding grounds.
Although these encounters may cause unease, experts stress that attacks on humans are extremely uncommon.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to swim near lifeguards, avoid dawn and dusk, and stay away from areas where seals or fish gather.
By staying alert and respectful of marine life, beachgoers can safely enjoy New Jersey’s vibrant shorelines while coexisting with the ocean’s top predators.
