For Caroline Duerr, the ocean was never just a backdrop β€” it was a birthright.

Growing up in Brielle, just minutes from the breaks at Manasquan Beach, she was practically raised on saltwater and surf wax.

Her father, a celebrated inductee of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame, introduced her to the waves before she could fully swim β€” a detail her mother recalls with a mix of amusement and quiet pride.

Learning the ocean's rhythm wasn't always graceful.

Duerr remembers the hard lessons β€” getting held under, taking waves head-on, testing limits before she knew where they were.

Her first board, a custom hot-pink Byrne she adored like a companion, eventually snapped during a relentless high-tide session, and the loss stung in the way only a surfer would understand.

Today, at 31, she channels that same grit into shaping the next generation of athletes β€” coaching advanced girls' surf teams at Pink Pineapple Surf, a pioneering all-girls Manasquan surf camp operating out of the Manasquan Inlet.

The camp, built around a ratio of one instructor for every three students, has earned a reputation as the Jersey Shore's most empowering space for young women entering the water.

Women's surfing in New Jersey has quietly shifted from the margins to the main stage, and programs like this are leading the charge.

Duerr also teaches English at a Monmouth County school and competes as a skateboarder, bringing a philosophy rooted in movement and resilience to every pursuit.

She sees falling not as failure, but as the whole point.

That mindset flows directly into how she mentors young surfers β€” urging them to breathe, reset, and paddle back out.

The spirit of Jersey Shore surfing she grew up with β€” bikes to the beach, longboarding with friends, evenings that seemed to arrange themselves without a plan β€” still pulses through everything she does.
