Bald eagles along New Jersey’s coast are facing a serious setback as avian influenza, or bird flu, claimed half of the 56 tested eagles in 2025.

 

This highly contagious virus has driven a 5% drop in active bald eagle nests, sliding from 264 in 2024 to just 251 in 2025, according to state officials.

 

The virus primarily strikes raptors like eagles, who often consume infected waterfowl, causing swift illness and death.
