A brutal winter has left many osprey nests battered along the Jersey Shore, sparking urgent restoration efforts. Staff and volunteers with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey are actively surveying the coastline to repair or replace nesting platforms critical for osprey survival.
About three-quarters of the state’s ospreys depend on these man-made structures, so local concern is high. Residents like Michele Guarducci of Fair Haven hope repairs will help ospreys feel safe and return each season.
Last year, a record number of osprey platforms failed, forcing some nests to be abandoned. Experts point to a drop in Atlantic menhaden—a vital fish for ospreys—as another challenge threatening their comeback. Read More... |
