Learn how the stranded seal pup and grey seal pup were aided by local teams |
A grey seal pup recently caused a stir in Harvey Cedars, New Jersey, after venturing onto Long Beach Boulevard and settling down for a nap in the middle of the road.
On the morning of February 24, 2026, a vigilant driver spotted the stranded seal pup and promptly alerted local authorities.
The Harvey Cedars Police Department and the Department of Public Works swiftly responded, ensuring the young seal's safety by halting traffic and monitoring her movements.
After a brief rest on Middlesex Avenue, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) arrived to transport the pup to their facility in Brigantine for a thorough medical evaluation.
Upon examination, the MMSC determined that the seal, estimated to be between six to eight weeks old, was underweight but free from injuries.
They initiated immediate care, including tube feeding with a specialized formula and electrolytes, to address her nutritional needs.
It's believed that the pup may have struggled to learn independent feeding after being weaned from her mother, a common challenge for young grey seals.
While it's uncommon for seals to be found inland, the MMSC notes that they occasionally respond to cases where seals have wandered into residential areas or onto roadways.
Grey seal pups, in particular, are known for their tendency to stray from their usual habitats, sometimes leading them into precarious situations.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of local authorities and the MMSC, this adventurous pup is now on the path to recovery and will be released back into her natural environment once she regains her strength. |
